МТ: In a TV documentary that I translated, the director of the Bundestag library stacks explained that the only ordering system they use to arrange the books is by physical size of the book – not by subject as in the Dewey system, not alphabetically by author or title – nothing, but the size of the book. And they have to be able to locate any book on a minimum of clues within 30 minutes. On looking more closely at the pictures, I could see that not even the size was all that homogenous – neither thickness, nor dimensions of the volume. So it remains a mystery, how they are able to arrange all these books – 1.3 million of them, so far – and still be able to locate any one of them in a matter of minutes.
